Roads
  • The National Highways Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2011 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, C.P. Joshi on December 19, 2011.  The Bill was referred to the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture on January 13, 2012, which is scheduled to submit its report by March 15, 2012.
  • The National Highways Authority of India Act, 1988 established the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the development, maintenance and management of national highways.   The NHAI consists of a chairman, up to 5 full-time members and up to 4 part-time members. 
  • The Bill expands the authority.  It will now consist of a chairman, up to 6 full-time members and 6 part-time members.  At least two of the part-time members must be non-government professionals with knowledge or experience in financial management, transportation planning or any other relevant discipline.
