Legislators across the country voted for the next President of India on the first day of the 2022 Monsoon Session. The polling began at 10AM at the Parliament House and State Assemblies simultaneously. The counting of votes will take place on Thursday.
Lok Sabha was adjourned in the first half to allow MPs to cast their votes in the Presidential elections. After reconvening, the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2022 was introduced. The Family Courts Act, 1984 provides for the establishment of family courts in India and requires the central government to make the Act applicable in different states. Although Nagaland and Himachal Pradesh set up family courts in 2008 and 2019 respectively, central notifications extending the applicability of the Act to these states were never issued. Now, the Bill seeks to retrospectively apply the Act to these states and validate all actions taken by these courts.
In Rajya Sabha, newly elected and nominated Members took office. The House adjourned before noon amidst demands for discussion on price rise.
The Joint Committee on the Biodiversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021 received extension till the end of this week to submit its report.
