CPI(M) to oppose Bill on FDI in commodity exchanges

The CPI(M) announced that it would not support the Forward Contracts (Regulation) Amendment Bill, which will allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country’s commodity exchanges.

New IT Act to penalise companies for data theft
Economic Times, April 3     

The new Information Technology Act states that companies would be made liable to protect the data which they own, process or operate, failing which they would have to face legal action.

Salary hike for MPs: decision left to next Govt
Indian Express, April 4  

The Union Cabinet deferred the decision to form an ‘Emolument Commission’ to fix the salaries and perks for MPs to the next Parliament that will be constituted after general elections.

Ministry plans to regulate spas, invites guidelines from industry
Times of India, April 7  

The Health Ministry plans to regulate spas and health centres.  It has invited suggestions from the industry, consumer bodies and civil society organisation on the standards that every spa shall be required to follow.  

Steel may be back under Essential Commodities Act
Hindu, April 7  

The government is toying with the idea of bringing steel back under the Essential Commodities Act as prices of the core construction material soared by about Rs.7,000 a tonne within a three-month period.

Supreme Court upholds law for 27% OBC quota
Hindu, April 7  

The Supreme Court upheld the law that reserves 27% of the seats for candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes in Central higher educational institutions.  But it excluded the ‘creamy layer’.

An independent regulator is in the offing for the airport sector.  The regulator would need to guard consumer interest, promote economic efficiency and pitch for financial viability of airport services.

Govt to set up regulator for construction industry

The government plans to set up a regulator for construction industry. Apart from facilitating single-window clearance, it would also be mandatory for every state government to levy worker welfare cess on construction industry.    

New law brings credit cards, crimes abroad under the scanner
Indian Express, April 15

The amendments to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act shall be introduced in the Budget session.  It brings international credit card transactions and money transfers and a new category of offences with “cross-border implications” under the scanner.
