• The Kerala Cashew Workers’ Relief and Welfare Fund (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 was promulgated on February 9, 2021.  It amends the Kerala Cashew Workers’ Relief and Welfare Fund Act, 1979.  The Act sets up a Fund to grant relief to, and promote the welfare of employees in cashew factories in the state.  The Fund is credited with: (i) contributions from employees, employers, and the state government, (ii) any voluntary donations, (iii) grants or advances made by central or state government or local authority, and (iv) any other amount under schemes framed as per the Act.  The Ordinance amends the amount of contribution to the Fund to be made by workers, employers, and the state government.
  • Contribution to the FundThe Act provides for an employer to contribute to the Fund, one rupee per employee for each day of work done by him in a cashew factory.  Each employee shall also contribute one rupee for each day of work done by him in a cashew factory.  Further, the government shall annually contribute, by way of a grant, an amount equal to the amount paid by the employees.  ​The Ordinance enhances the contribution of employers and employees to two rupees per day of work.  Further, it reduces the government’s share of annual contribution to the Fund to 50% of the total contribution made by employees.
