The Maharashtra Village Panchayats (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020
 

  • The Maharashtra Village Panchayats (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 was promulgated on June 24, 2020.  The Ordinance amends the Maharashtra Village Panchayats Act, 1958.  The Act provides for the constitution and administration of village panchayats in the state. The Ordinance amends the Act to provide:
     
  • Powers and Duties of State Government: The Act allows the state government to dissolve a panchayat if it thinks the panchayat has not been validly constituted as per the provisions of the Act, and appoint a person to perform the duties.  The Ordinance adds that the state government may appoint a suitable person as the administrator of a panchayat if the panchayat elections cannot be held due to circumstances such as: (i) natural calamity, (ii) war, (iii) emergency, or (iv) epidemic disease.
