Profile of the10th Sikkim Legislative Assembly

The results of the elections to the 10th Sikkim Legislative Assembly were declared today.  In this context, we analyse data on the profile of the incoming Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and compare it with the outgoing Assembly.

In the incoming assembly, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha has the highest representation
  • The SKM has the highest representation at 53%, followed by the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) at 47%. 
     
  • Outgoing CM Pawan Kumar Chamling was the longest serving CM in the country (since 1994), until SDF was narrowly defeated by SKM in this election.

The incoming assembly is older; gender composition remains the same
  • Average age of the incoming assembly has increased by four years to 52 years.
     
  • The number of young MLAs (25-40 years) has reduced by half in the incoming assembly, while the number of older MLAs (56 years and above) has nearly doubled.

Education profile of the assembly remains the same
  • The number of members with graduate, post-graduate and higher degrees remains the same.
