Profile of the 9th Mizoram Legislative Assembly

Results of the election to the 9th Mizoram Legislative Assembly were declared on December 4, 2023.  The Assembly has 40 seats.  This note compares the profiles of the incoming Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) with that of the previous term of the Assembly.

More than one woman elected for the first time; More post graduates

 

 

Note: Education profile data for 2018 includes only 39 MLAs, to account for one member who won from two constituencies.

  • Three women have been elected to the 9th Assembly.  This is the first time more than one woman has been elected to the Assembly since its formation in 1972.  Note that this analysis does not account for any changes due to bye-elections. 

  • The proportion of MLAs with a post graduate degree has increased from 28% in 2018 to 40% in 2023.

Age profile remains similar

  • Age of MLAs in the 9th Mizoram Assembly remains similar to those elected in 2018.  93% of the newly elected MLAs are over the age of 40.
