Lok Sabha today took up discussion on the supplementary demands for grants for the year 2017-18. Members participating on the debate spoke on a range of issues such as issues related to implementation of GST, impact of demonetisation, inflation, among other things. Members across political parties also requested for an increase in the amount given to them (Rs 5cr.) under the MPLAD scheme. Members touched upon other related issues such as increasing allocation to schemes, better utilisation of funds by streamlining departments under single ministries and increasing amounts given to states.
Rajya Sabha passed the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill. The Bill amends the Act of 2009 by extending the deadline for teachers to acquire the prescribed minimum qualifications for appointment.
During the debate, members raised several concerns regarding teacher training and broader issues related to the education sector. Issues such as teacher-student ratio, assigning teachers on non teaching duties, monitoring of teacher training programs, among others were raised. Members speaking in the debate emphasised that curriculum, methodology and training of teachers at all levels; primary, secondary and higher education must be focussed upon.
